Compassion for LGBTQ+ Students

In the Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, most high schools have Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) groups supported by school admininistrators, parents, and students. Nina Valdez's middle school is one of the few in JCPS that has a GSA. Nina will discuss her school's GSA and how it has helped her, her friends, and her school. She will talk about the group's mission, membership, how often the group meets, who sponsors the organization, and what members discuss during the meetings. This informal presentation by a Louisville middle school student will be a time for school officials, parents, and students to openly discuss the issue of sexual orientation and how wellness in our schools and community depends upon LGBTQ+ awareness and compassion.
Nina Valdez is 13 years old and attends Noe Middle School in Louisville, where she is a member of the GSA. She is a dedicated student who also enjoys soccer, circus (aerials, unicycling, diabolo, walking globe, stilt walking, and juggling), photography, video making, and ukulele.
