Susan E. Fowler is a storyteller artist and scientist who created HARMONY BY HAND in1990. Her unique, educational programs weave drama, music, sign language, and sketches to celebrate the miracle of the earth.
Currently living in southwestern Indiana, Susan travels throughout the Midwest and the United States, creatively blending the arts and the sciences to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and harmony. After graduating from Purdue University where she studied agronomy, Susan lived in Orlando, Florida, for six years, where her appreciation for the natural world grew. There she served as an earth science teacher, a horticulturalist at a botanical garden, a naturalist at a wetlands site, and an education coordinator at EPCOT, Living Seas, and Walt Disney.
Susan’s high-energy, interactive children’s programs are customized to promote an awareness of a region’s natural and cultural history–its sense of place. From Lewis and Clark to Abraham Lincoln, from the water cycle to wetlands to barges on the river, she personalizes her programs to fit the occasion and the location. She often brings children’s literature to life. The story comes off the page as children become the characters, the landscape, and sometimes even a vocabulary word. From Dr. Seuss to Marcus Pfister’s The Rainbow Fish and countless others, her multi-faceted activities evoke joy and laughter, and convey a spirit of friendship, hope, and harmony–for all ages.
Susan is excited to be a part of the children’s programs for the 2011 Ferdinand Folk Festival. She will be presenting two separate 20-minute programs–at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.–to give more children the opportunity to attend.
All times are eastern standard.
